About The Program

Step into the future of mining with the Zero Waste Mining program, a dynamic learning experience designed to inspire high school students to reimagine the mining industry through STEM, design thinking, and innovation. This program challenges students to conceptualise a sustainable, efficient, and community-centered mine of the future. Through a series of engaging activities, participants will tackle real-world problems, develop practical solutions, and gain insights into the advanced technologies shaping modern mining practices.

In our Technology in Mining activity, students will explore cutting-edge advancements like autonomous machinery, drones, and artificial intelligence. They’ll delve into how these innovations are revolutionising the mining industry in Australia, enhancing safety and efficiency. Armed with this knowledge, participants will design a comprehensive plan to integrate these technologies into their mine, optimising processes and reducing waste.

From there, students will start to explore Sustainability in Mining, as they analyse how mining operations can coexist harmoniously with the environment. By investigating renewable energy sources, biodiversity preservation, and recycling opportunities, they will craft innovative strategies to ensure sustainable practices.

In the final challenge, Community Engagement, students will think critically about how mining companies can leave a lasting, positive impact on local communities. From economic stimulation to cultural preservation, participants will develop creative solutions to foster a harmonious relationship between industry and society. This workshop empowers students to envision a greener, more inclusive future for mining.
