About The Program

The Global Leaders Program is a hands-on leadership and innovation experience that challenges students to think beyond their local community and explore some of the major social, environmental and economic issues shaping our world. Through interactive workshops, global scenarios and collaborative challenges, students step into the shoes of changemakers as they investigate real-world issues connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and develop innovative solutions for communities around the world.

Designed to build confidence in leadership, empathy and global citizenship, the program takes students through a design thinking process as they research complex challenges, understand different perspectives and develop user-centred solutions. Along the way, students strengthen their teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills while learning how leaders, organisations and communities can work together to create meaningful and sustainable change.

Workshop Themes Include:

  1. Global Challenges & Citizenship Students explore major global issues including sustainability, inequality, education, healthcare, climate change and rapidly changing cities while considering their role as future global citizens.

  2. Empathy & Understanding Communities Students step into fictional communities and develop user personas to understand how different people experience global challenges and why successful solutions need to consider local needs.

  3. Design Thinking & Global Innovation Students work in teams to research, ideate and develop innovative solutions to a complex challenge connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

  4. Leadership, Debate & Decision Making Students pitch and defend their ideas, respond to feedback and adapt their solutions as new challenges emerge, developing confidence in communication, leadership and decision making.

Students can explore a range of fictional global communities, each presenting different challenges. These can include rapidly growing cities facing housing and pollution pressures, communities experiencing inequalities in education and healthcare, or coastal regions responding to climate change and threats to ecosystems. Schools can also nominate a specific Sustainable Development Goal, global issue or curriculum theme for the program to explore.

The program works particularly well as an introduction to global citizenship, leadership or sustainability units, as an enrichment experience for student leaders, or as a practical way to bring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to life. Longer programs can incorporate additional research, debates, simulations and project development, allowing students to respond to changing scenarios and further refine their solutions.

Program Outcomes:

By the end of the program, students will:

  1. Develop confidence in leadership, collaboration and communication

  2. Strengthen empathy, critical thinking and design thinking skills

  3. Build an understanding of global citizenship and sustainable development

  4. Explore how communities and organisations respond to complex global challenges

  5. Develop, adapt and pitch an innovative solution designed for a global community
