A Whole School Approach To Entrepreneurship At Northholm Grammar School

Entrepreneurship isn't a skill that develops overnight. It grows through repeated opportunities to identify problems, think creatively, collaborate with others and turn ideas into action. That's exactly the philosophy behind the entrepreneurship programs BOP Industries has helped deliver at Northholm Grammar School.

Looking to strengthen their school entrepreneurship program across both the primary and secondary schools, Northholm Grammar partnered with BOP Industries to deliver a series of immersive learning experiences throughout Term 4. Rather than delivering the same workshop to every cohort, the school wanted each year level to explore entrepreneurship through a different lens while building on the knowledge and skills students had developed throughout their schooling.

Working closely with the teaching team, we customised a suite of programs that aligned with the school's existing scope and sequence, ensuring every experience complemented the broader entrepreneurship journey already taking place across the campus. Across Years 5, 6, 9 and 10, students participated in a range of two and three-day innovation challenges that explored space, sustainability, future industries, global issues and human-centred design.

The partnership has now become an ongoing part of Northholm Grammar's entrepreneurship curriculum, with customised programs delivered to multiple year levels each year.

Building A Whole-School Entrepreneurship Journey

One of the strengths of Northholm Grammar's approach was recognising that entrepreneurship can look different at every stage of a student's education. Instead of focusing solely on starting businesses, entrepreneurship became a way for students to explore curiosity, creativity, resilience and leadership through authentic challenges.

Together, we selected a collection of programs that aligned with the learning outcomes for each year level.

Students in Years 5 and 6 explored programs including Galactic Innovators and Designed Spaces, applying STEM, creativity and human-centred design to imagine future environments and solve meaningful problems.

Year 9 students participated in Industry Innovators, where they investigated real challenges facing Australian industries while developing entrepreneurial solutions alongside insights from professionals working in the field.

Meanwhile, Year 10 students stepped into the role of global decision-makers through the Global Leaders program, tackling complex challenges linked to sustainability, equality, biodiversity and community development.

While every program explored a different theme, they were all built around the goal of giving students opportunities to think critically, collaborate effectively and design solutions that could make a genuine difference.

What The Learning Experiences Looked Like

Across each program, students were immersed in highly interactive learning experiences that combined design thinking, teamwork and hands-on problem solving.

For younger students, the focus was on big picture thinking. During the Galactic Innovators program, teams imagined humanity's future beyond Earth as they designed spacecraft, sustainable habitats and innovative technologies that could support life in space. They investigated STEM concepts, explored emerging technologies, generated ideas using design thinking and developed prototypes before presenting their solutions during a gallery walk attended by other year levels.

The Designed Spaces program challenged students to rethink familiar environments around their own school. Working in teams, students selected an area of the campus before investigating how technology, sustainability and user-centred design could transform the space for future learners. Through workshops, mood boarding, concept development and pitching, students produced creative proposals grounded in the needs of their school community.

For Year 9 students, entrepreneurship took on a stronger industry and intrapreneurship focus. The Industry Innovators program introduced students to current challenges facing sectors such as transport, sport, retail and aviation. Throughout the two-day design sprint, students researched customers, analysed competitors, explored examples from around the world and developed innovative solutions before pitching their ideas to a judging panel. Industry professionals joined students throughout the program, sharing insights into innovation and providing authentic perspectives on how organisations approach complex challenges today. Several of the strongest student concepts were later shared back with industry partners, giving students the experience of presenting ideas beyond the classroom.

Year 10 students broadened their thinking even further through the Global Leaders program. Working within fictional cities facing real global challenges, students designed community initiatives, participated in structured debates and navigated a fast-paced simulation where every decision affected the future of their community. Across three days they explored issues including housing, education, pollution, biodiversity and climate resilience while learning how different stakeholders approach complex social challenges.

What Students Created

One of the most rewarding aspects of the partnership was seeing every program culminate in students producing work they were genuinely proud of.

Across the various year levels, students developed:

  • Future-focused space technologies and habitats.

  • Redesigned learning spaces for the school campus.

  • Industry innovation concepts addressing real-world challenges.

  • Community initiatives tackling global sustainability issues.

  • Professional poster boards and visual concept presentations.

  • Team pitches delivered to peers, teachers and judging panels.

Rather than completing worksheets or hypothetical activities, students created tangible solutions that demonstrated their ideas with confidence. Gallery walks, pitching sessions and debate finals also gave students valuable opportunities to celebrate one another's work while learning from the diverse thinking happening across the cohort.

Why This Approach Worked

What made this partnership particularly successful was that every learning experience formed part of a larger entrepreneurship journey.

Each program built on the school's existing vision while introducing fresh contexts and new challenges appropriate for different stages of learning. Students weren't just learning about entrepreneurship, they were practising the mindset of entrepreneurs by identifying opportunities, empathising with users, collaborating in teams, testing ideas and communicating solutions.

By combining real-world challenges with engaging, hands-on learning experiences, Northholm Grammar created opportunities for students to develop the confidence and skills that will support them well beyond the classroom.
