Using Student Choice To Create A Future-Focused Integrated Learning Experience At Loreto Normanhurst

As schools prepare students for a rapidly changing future, many are creating opportunities for students to tackle real world, multidisciplinary challenges. At Loreto Normanhurst, this philosophy is embedded through an integrated learning program that runs from Years 5 to 10, encouraging students to connect ideas across subject areas while developing the skills they'll need beyond school.

For the Year 10 program, the school wanted to create an engaging three-day learning experience that would inspire students as they think big about their futures. They were looking for a program that was hands-on, collaborative and innovation-focused, while also giving students ownership over what they learned. Working alongside the teaching team, BOP Industries designed an experience centred around student choice and future skills.
Rather than every student completing the same project, students were invited to select the learning pathway that interested them most. With the full cohort participating, students split into three streams, with two Business Builders groups and one Global Leaders group emerging as the clear favourites. The result was a personalised learning experience where students were able to pursue challenges aligned with their own interests, passions and future aspirations.

Putting Student Choice At The Centre

One of the features of Loreto Normanhurst's integrated learning program is the emphasis placed on student agency. Rather than assigning every student to the same project, students were given the opportunity to vote on the programs they wanted to participate in.
The clear favourites were Business Builders and Global Leaders, allowing students to engage with topics that reflected both their interests and personal values. Some students were excited by the opportunity to launch their own business, while others were drawn towards solving complex global challenges and creating positive social impact.
Although the projects looked very different, both streams worked to help students develop the confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing future.
Two Programs. One Shared Goal.
Students choosing the Business Builders stream spent three days transforming ideas into real business concepts. Working in small teams, students identified opportunities connected to their own interests, strengths and skills before designing businesses they could realistically launch for less than $100 during the upcoming school holidays. This practical constraint encouraged students to think creatively while demonstrating that entrepreneurship doesn't require significant funding to get started.
Across the three days, teams explored customer research, branding, marketing, pricing and product development before creating promotional materials, designing market stalls and preparing pitches for their final showcase. The program concluded with a market day experience where teachers, parents and members of the school community were invited to explore each student business and hear directly from the young entrepreneurs behind the ideas.

Students participating in the Global Leaders stream tackled an entirely different challenge as they worked within fictional communities inspired by real global issues. Teams selected the city that best aligned with their interests before investigating challenges connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Across the three-day experience, students designed community initiatives, communicated their ideas through poster presentations, participated in structured debates and navigated a crisis simulation where every decision influenced the future of their community. By exploring issues such as climate resilience, biodiversity, education, healthcare and housing, students developed a deeper understanding of the complexity of modern leadership while strengthening their communication and collaborative problem-solving skills.
What Students Created
Across the three-day experience, students produced an impressive range of learning outcomes, including:
Businesses designed to launch with less than $100.
Professional branding and marketing campaigns.
Market stalls showcased to the school community.
Business pitches presented to judging panels.
Community initiatives responding to global challenges.
Visual poster presentations.
Structured debate presentations.
Solutions developed through an immersive crisis simulation.
Rather than working towards a traditional assessment task, students finished the program with tangible projects that reflected their creativity, teamwork and ability to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
Why This Approach Worked

The success of the program came from recognising that engagement increases when students have ownership over their learning.
By giving students meaningful choices, real world challenges and opportunities to collaborate around shared interests, Loreto Normanhurst created an experience that felt less like a school assignment and more like an opportunity to explore possible futures.
Whether students imagined launching a side hustle, solving community challenges or developing innovative responses to global issues, every participant left having strengthened the skills that will help them navigate whatever pathway they choose after school.
