Inspiring The Next Generation of Business Students At Grace Lutheran College

One of the biggest challenges facing Business departments is helping younger students understand what business education is really about. For many Year 7 students, the subject can feel unfamiliar, with little understanding of the diverse range of careers, industries and opportunities it can unlock.

Grace Lutheran College wanted to change that.
Each year, ahead of subject selection, the school's Business department partners with BOP Industries to deliver an engaging one-day business experience for the entire Year 7 cohort. Rather than introducing students to business through textbooks or theory, the goal is to immerse them in entrepreneurship, innovation and problem-solving through hands-on challenges that demonstrate how business shapes the world around them.
By making learning active, collaborative and fun, the program gives students an authentic taste of Business Studies while encouraging them to consider the subject as they move into Years 8 and 9.

Bringing Business To Life
Rather than spending the day learning business terminology, students experience what it's actually like to think like entrepreneurs.
The day begins with a fast-paced innovation challenge where students redesign everyday products through a series of rapid design sprints. This energetic opening activity introduces the concept of innovation while demonstrating that great ideas often begin with identifying opportunities to improve existing products or experiences.
Students then hear from a young entrepreneur who shares their own journey into business, helping students see that entrepreneurship isn't something reserved for adults or tech tycoons. It can begin with an idea, a passion or a problem worth solving.
From there, students form diverse teams using BOP Industries' Hipster, Hacker, Hustler and Humanist framework, encouraging every group to include a balance of creative thinkers, problem-solvers, leaders and people-focused collaborators.
Two Different Ways To Explore Business
To keep the learning relevant and engaging, Grace Lutheran College alternates between two different business-themed programs each year, each exploring a different side of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Business Builders
The Business Builders program encourages students to transform their interests, hobbies and skills into viable business ideas.

Students choose the type of business they would like to create, whether that's a product-based business, service business, social enterprise or technology startup. Throughout the day they investigate potential customers, develop customer personas, create a unique brand identity, design a product or service and identify the value their business offers.
The experience concludes with students preparing and delivering a short pitch, giving every team the opportunity to communicate their business idea while building confidence in public speaking and teamwork.
Future of Retail
The Future of Retail program shifts the focus from creating a new business to reimagining an existing one.

Working in teams, students select a retail brand they know and begin investigating how shopping has changed over time. They explore emerging technologies, analyse current customer experiences and investigate how retailers are responding to changing consumer expectations.
Students then redesign their chosen brand by considering three key questions:
How could the in-store experience become more engaging?
How could the online experience be improved?
How could the business better align with the values of modern consumers through sustainability and conscious consumption?
By the end of the day, teams present their future retail concept through either a visual poster presentation or a short advisory board-style pitch.
Why This Approach Works
Introducing Business Studies through practical experiences helps students see the subject differently.

Rather than reading about definitions or learning isolated concepts, students experience what entrepreneurs, marketers, designers and innovators do every day. They collaborate in teams, make creative decisions, communicate ideas and discover that business can combine creativity, technology, sustainability and leadership.
Perhaps most importantly, students leave with a much broader understanding of where Business Studies can take them, helping them make more informed decisions when selecting subjects for the years ahead.
