About The Resource
As the lines between the physical and digital worlds continue to blur, technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) are transforming how we learn, collaborate, design and solve problems. From immersive office spaces and schools in the metaverse to virtual tourism and reimagined online shopping opportunities, extended reality (XR) is rapidly becoming a key technology shaping the future for us all.
The XR Creators Unit of Work invites students to step into the role of future focused designers as they explore how immersive technologies can be used to solve real world challenges. Students begin by developing an understanding of XR technologies and how organisations across industries are using them to create new products, services and experiences. Through case studies and discussions, they explore the opportunities and challenges presented by these emerging technologies and consider how they may influence society in the years ahead.
Working in collaborative teams, students then apply design thinking techniques to identify challenges within their communities that could be addressed using immersive technology. From there, they move through a structured innovation process that includes ideation, research, pitching and prototyping as they develop their own XR concept. Along the way, students build key skills in creativity, collaboration, digital literacy and problem solving while gaining exposure to the technologies shaping future industries.
The unit culminates in a project showcase, where students present their XR concepts and demonstrate their prototypes to their peers. By the end of the program, students will have gained a strong understanding of extended reality technologies and developed the confidence to think creatively about how emerging technologies can be used to design meaningful solutions for real world problems.
