About The Resource
How can the aviation industry reduce its environmental impact while continuing to connect the world?
In the Sustainable Aviation Challenge Pack, students explore how airlines can rethink the future of flying through cleaner aircraft design, smarter waste management and stronger sustainability communication.
Working through a real-world aviation challenge, students investigate how airlines could adopt more sustainable practices across multiple parts of the passenger journey. Across three structured challenge activities, students design a future aircraft using alternative fuel ideas and sustainable design features, develop practical solutions to reduce waste across the in-flight experience and create a campaign to promote these initiatives to the public.
To support their thinking, students are introduced to three user personas representing different perspectives within the aviation ecosystem, including passengers, airline leadership and frontline staff. These personas encourage students to consider how sustainability solutions must balance environmental impact, customer experience and operational practicality.
Throughout the pack, students engage with curated aviation case studies, sustainability examples and airline innovations from around the world, including sustainable aviation fuels, zero-waste flights, aircraft recycling initiatives and public awareness campaigns. This helps students understand how sustainability in aviation requires both technological innovation and behavioural change.
Designed for innovation programs, project based learning, and future industries education, this pack can be completed individually, delivered collaboratively, or used by teachers as the foundation for a larger sustainability, aviation, or future industries unit of work. Some schools choose to offer one Industry Innovator Challenge Pack to all students, while others purchase multiple packs to allow students to choose an industry challenge aligned to their interests.
