About The Resource

The Solving The Problem: Youth Vaping Unit Of Work is a project based learning resource that challenges students to explore one of the most pressing wellbeing issues affecting young people today. Using design thinking principles, students investigate the rise of youth vaping, examine the health risks associated with vaping and develop innovative solutions designed to reduce vaping in school communities.

Working in teams, students begin by exploring current research, media reports and community perspectives to better understand why vaping has become increasingly common among adolescents. They then move into empathy based learning, using user personas and surveys to understand how different young people experience vaping and how schools, families and communities are impacted.

As the unit progresses, students investigate existing campaigns, digital tools and health initiatives from around the world before defining clear problem statements that guide their work. Through rapid ideation, collaborative planning and minimum viable product development, teams create an original solution that may take the form of a campaign, digital platform, service, or educational initiative.

The unit culminates in a final pitch presentation where each team presents its solution, explains how it responds to youth vaping and demonstrates why it would be effective in a real school or community setting. Designed to build critical thinking, empathy, collaboration and communication skills, this unit gives students the opportunity to tackle a highly relevant issue while developing practical innovation capability.
