About The Resource

The Solving The Problem: E-Scooter Safety Unit Of Work is a project based learning resource that challenges students to explore one of the emerging safety issues facing modern communities. Using design thinking principles, students investigate the rise of e-scooters, examine the causes behind accidents and injuries and develop innovative solutions designed to improve safety in their local area.

Working in teams, students begin by exploring current news stories, safety regulations, and public conversations around e-scooters in Australia. They investigate why e-scooters have become increasingly popular, how they are being used across communities and where key safety concerns are emerging for riders, pedestrians and other road users.

As the unit progresses, students move into empathy based learning by working through user personas and surveys that reveal how different people experience e-scooter safety challenges. They investigate case studies from around the world, analyse how leading e-scooter brands are improving safety and define problem statements that guide their thinking.

Through rapid ideation, collaborative planning and minimum viable product development, teams create an original solution that may take the form of a product, digital tool, awareness campaign, service, or local initiative. The unit culminates in a final pitch presentation where each team presents its idea, explains how it responds to local safety concerns and demonstrates why it would improve e-scooter safety in practice. Designed to build critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills, this unit gives students the opportunity to respond to a highly relevant transport issue through innovation.
