About The Resource
How can young people help shape better mental health support for schools, communities, and their generation?
The Mental Health Hackathon Unit of Work invites students to explore the future of youth mental health by designing practical initiatives that respond to real challenges facing young people today.
Across a structured 10-week program, students work collaboratively to investigate current youth mental health issues, develop user personas, and design three connected solutions: a digital mental health platform, a supportive community space and a school-based wellbeing initiative. As their ideas evolve, students also build a brand identity for their initiative and prepare a final pitch to present their solution.
The unit is built around user-centred design, helping students understand how empathy, research, collaboration and critical thinking shape innovation. Each week introduces a new focus area through editable slide decks featuring case studies, discussion prompts, design activities and guided research tasks. Printable worksheets support each lesson by giving students structured tools for ideation, SWOT analysis, rapid concept generation, branding and pitch preparation.
Designed for secondary classrooms, wellbeing programs, innovation electives and project-based learning environments, the unit provides teachers with a clear 10-week delivery structure including learning objectives, classroom instructions and materials required for each session. Students finish the program by presenting a youth-led mental health initiative that demonstrates creativity, practicality and social impact.
