About The Resource
The Designed Spaces Unit Of Work is a ten-week project based learning resource that challenges students to explore how school and community spaces may evolve over the next 30 years through design thinking, sustainability and innovation. Students are invited to select a space on their school campus or within their local community and redesign it to better meet the needs of future users.
Working in teams, students investigate how their chosen space currently functions, who uses it and what opportunities exist to improve its functionality, inclusivity, sustainability and long-term relevance. Through a structured design process, students learn how effectives spaces are shaped by user needs, practical design choices and emerging technologies.
As the unit progresses, students create user personas, map journeys, analyse environmental impact, explore global design trends and investigate how technologies could enhance the way spaces are used. They then translate these ideas into moodboards, sketches and prototype concepts that demonstrate how their redesigned space could operate in the future.
The unit culminates in a final pitch presentation supported by a visual poster board where each team presents its redesigned space, explains the design decisions made and demonstrates how the concept improves learning, accessibility, sustainability and user experience. Designed to build creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills, this unit provides students with a practical introduction to future focused design thinking.
