About The Resource
The Community Leaders Unit Of Work is a ten-week project based learning resource that challenges students to explore the world of sustainable development, global citizenship and community leadership through real world global issues linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Working in teams, students investigate how leaders, organisations and communities respond to complex social, environmental and development challenges across different parts of the world. Through three global challenge scenarios, Metropolia, Equalityville and Aquatopia, students select a community context and step into the role of community leaders to better understand how different stakeholders contribute to long term change.
As the unit progresses, students explore global case studies, analyse stakeholder perspectives, complete rapid ideation activities, create user personas and develop innovative solutions that respond to their chosen scenario. The program encourages students to think globally and act locally as they build empathy, develop leadership capability and strengthen their understanding of how collaboration drives sustainable outcomes.
Across the term, students complete two major assessment experiences. The first is a Global Challenge Debate, where teams present early ideas to a panel and respond to feedback through persuasive pitching and questioning. The second is the SDGs Challenge Simulation, where teams must adapt their ideas in real time as new challenges unfold, requiring strategic thinking, resilience and collaboration.
Designed to build critical thinking, communication, leadership and problem solving skills, this unit gives students a practical opportunity to engage deeply with global challenges while developing innovative ideas for communities around the world.
