About The Resource
The Community Creators Unit of Work is a ten-week design thinking program that challenges students to explore how simple, creative ideas can improve everyday life within local communities. Inspired by the global concept of The Fun Theory, students investigate how positive behaviour can be encouraged through engaging design, practical innovation and community centred thinking.
Throughout the unit, students work collaboratively in teams to identify a local issue they care about and develop an innovative solution that encourages people to take positive action. Challenges may focus on areas such as waste, recycling, transport, inclusion, kindness, public spaces, or community participation. Using a structured innovation process, students move from empathy and research through to ideation, prototyping and pitching.
Across ten weeks, students explore user needs, develop personas, analyse examples of creative behaviour change campaigns from around the world and build minimum viable products that demonstrate how their ideas could work in practice. They are encouraged to test assumptions, gather feedback and refine their concepts based on real user perspectives.
The unit culminates in a final pitch presentation where each team presents their solution, explains the challenge they are addressing and demonstrates how their concept could create meaningful change within their community. Students are encouraged to communicate their thinking visually through slides, mock-ups, sketches, or prototype examples.
This unit develops critical future focused capabilities including collaboration, problem solving, communication, empathy, creative thinking and entrepreneurial mindset. It also supports cross-curricular learning by connecting design thinking with civics, social innovation, sustainability, and local community engagement.
