The Something School 2021 - Exploring Careers In Digital

What comes to mind when you think of a career in digital? Is it wearing a hoodie and jeans and writing code all day? Perhaps it's wearing a suit or heels and working for a big consulting firm? At the Something School 2021, we teamed up with the wonderful humans at Something Digital to explore this question and to see what exactly a career in digital looks like today.

To do this, we invited 120 students from 12 schools to spend an action-packed day hearing from speakers, working on challenges, and posing questions, 32 floors above the Brisbane CBD.

Over the course of the day, students heard from a standout program of speakers including the Executive Director Of Marketing And Communications of the Cross River Rail, the Head Of Gamification at Deloitte Digital, and even the Head of School, Professor of Politics and Public Policy at the University Of Queensland.

In between keynote speeches and panel discussions, we got students putting their learnings into practice as they worked in groups to develop solutions for how to eliminate hate speech online, ideas for a digital innovation they could implement around Brisbane to improve the quality of life for citizens, and even exploring new and emerging technologies and the ethical implications these technologies might have on them.

This was a brilliant day for everyone involved with feedback from students and teachers coming back at 4.7/5 overall. Our industry partners involved loved seeing the amazing ideas generated by the young people in the room, and our students and teachers left feeling inspired and empowered, ready for the term ahead.
