Redesigning Professional Learning Conferences For Educators With EduFest WA

That was the vision behind EduFest WA.

When the Malka Foundation and Bloom Centre for Youth Innovation began exploring the idea of a boutique education conference, they wanted to create something different from a traditional professional development event. Rather than focusing solely on presentations, they envisioned a conference where educators could learn from industry, discover innovative classroom practice and leave with tangible ideas ready to implement in their own schools.

Since launching in 2024, BOP Industries has partnered with Bloom and the Malka Foundation to design and deliver EduFest WA, an annual professional learning conference in Perth complemented by regional events in Bunbury and Geraldton. Together, these events bring educators, school leaders, industry and government together to explore innovation, entrepreneurship and the future of education.

Designing Professional Learning Around Action

From the beginning, the goal was to create an experience that would give educators the skills and experience to design innovative learning experiences to prepare their students for success in a rapidly changing world.

Working alongside the steering committee, BOP Industries designed and managed every stage of the event, from branding, website development and registrations through to speaker recruitment, program design, marketing, event logistics and post-event evaluation. Every element was intentionally designed to maximise collaboration, networking and practical learning rather than passive participation.

The conference program blended keynote presentations, industry panels, educator-led masterclasses and structured networking opportunities, creating space for attendees to hear from innovative educators alongside leaders from startups, business, government and emerging industries.

Learning From Education And Industry

One of EduFest WA's defining features is the diversity of voices represented throughout the program.

Industry leaders shared insights into the skills shaping the future workforce, entrepreneurs discussed how innovation happens beyond the classroom and educators showcased the projects they were already leading in schools across Western Australia.

Masterclasses provided practical examples of innovative teaching strategies from educators representing government, Catholic and independent schools, allowing attendees to explore ideas that had already been successfully implemented in classrooms.

By bringing together education and industry, attendees gained a broader perspective on how schools can better prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Turning Inspiration Into Action

Rather than finishing the day with another keynote, EduFest WA concluded with collaborative design sprints that challenged educators to apply what they had learned.

Working alongside colleagues from different schools and sectors, attendees redesigned learning experiences, developed new initiatives and explored practical ways to strengthen innovation within their own communities.

The goal wasn't simply to inspire educators for a day. It was to ensure they returned to their schools with tangible ideas, new professional connections and the confidence to begin implementing change.

Taking Professional Learning Regional

Following the success of the Perth conference, the partnership expanded to include dedicated professional learning days in Geraldton and Bunbury. These regional events were designed as a way to provide high-quality professional learning to educators across the state.

By bringing industry mentors, inspiring speakers and collaborative workshops directly into regional communities, educators were able to connect with colleagues, strengthen local partnerships and develop future-focused learning experiences without travelling to Perth. Across both years, attendees reported increased confidence in designing innovative learning experiences, engaging with industry and preparing students for the future of work.
