Developing The Next Generation Of Leaders At The Peel Emerging Leaders Day

Leadership looks very different today than it did a decade ago.

As young people prepare for a future shaped by changing technologies, emerging industries and evolving career pathways, they need opportunities to build confidence, strengthen their networks, develop professional communication skills and understand how they can make a positive impact within their communities.

That was the vision behind the Peel Emerging Leaders Day.

Working alongside South Metropolitan TAFE, the Jobs and Skills Centre, Community Bank Pinjarra, the Peel Development Commission, GoSH and the Bloom Centre for Youth Innovation, BOP Industries designed and delivered a one-day leadership experience that brought together 80 students from seven schools across the Peel region. Rather than focusing solely on leadership theory, the program combined future-focused learning, industry connections and hands-on skill development to help students prepare for life beyond school.

Bringing Young Leaders Together

The Emerging Leaders Day was designed to connect students from different schools, backgrounds and aspirations while helping them better understand the opportunities available within their own region.

The day opened with a keynote and interactive future of work masterclass exploring the trends reshaping careers, emerging industries and the skills that will become increasingly valuable throughout students' working lives. Rather than asking students to predict a single career, the focus was on developing the adaptability, curiosity and confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Learning From Local Leaders

One of the highlights of the day was hearing directly from professionals already creating impact across the Peel region.

A panel of local leaders shared their own career journeys, the challenges they had overcome and the opportunities they had discovered by saying yes, taking initiative and remaining open to new experiences. By showcasing professionals from the local community, students were able to see that meaningful careers and leadership opportunities already existed close to home.

The program then shifted from inspiration to action as students participated in practical masterclasses focused on building their own professional identity.

Building Skills For The Future

Throughout the day, students developed a range of practical employability skills they could immediately begin using beyond the classroom.

They reflected on their strengths, passions and values before developing a personal brand and crafting an elevator pitch to confidently communicate who they are, what they care about and the value they can bring to future employers, universities and community organisations. Students also strengthened their professional communication skills through guided networking activities, giving them the opportunity to practise introducing themselves and building new connections with both peers and industry guests.

By the conclusion of the program, every student had developed practical tools they could continue using throughout school, future study and their careers.

Measuring The Impact

The Peel Emerging Leaders Day wasn't just designed to inspire students for a day. It was designed to build measurable confidence.

Across the program, students reported a 15.9% increase in overall confidence, including a 25.6% increase in confidence when growing their professional network and a 16.7% increase in confidence communicating their ideas. The program also received an overall rating of 4.36 out of 5, with students highlighting the opportunity to connect with young people from other schools as one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.

The success of the Peel Emerging Leaders Day came from recognising that leadership is developed through experience, not simply discussed in a classroom.

By combining inspiring speakers, local role models, practical skill-building and meaningful networking opportunities, students left with greater confidence, stronger communication skills and a clearer understanding of the pathways available to them.

Most importantly, the program strengthened connections between schools, community organisations and industry, creating a shared investment in developing the Peel region's next generation of leaders.
