On the 24th of March 2019, BOP Education turned two and oh how the time has flown! Over the past two years we've gone from a group of friends skipping school and borrowing iPads to teach other students, to now being a state leader in technology and entrepreneurship education and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on how we got to where we are now.
In March of 2017, right in the middle of year 12 exams, our founder Scott was approached by the team at the World Science Festival Brisbane about organising an activation. Initially intrigued by our hologram displays, the crew were hoping they could get and interactive hologram installation and after a bit of planning we had quickly pulled together our first 'Film Your Own Hologram' workshops to be run at the festival in 2017.
These workshops didn't exactly look like the workshops we run today. With a handful of friends, some borrowed second-hand tablets, some of our original holograms and lots of dress-ups, we launched our first ever 'Film Your Own Hologram' workshops, working with over 4,000 people in just four days!
After the crazy four days we had in March 2017, we then went back to school and back to work in the events and marketing space working on our holograms. We didn't actually get back into the classroom until later that year when we received a flood of requests from teachers across the country for National Science Week workshops.
After working with these teachers and students throughout the second half of 2017, we quickly realised that there was a massive gap in resources for technology and entrepreneurship education and that there needed to be a greater connection between industry and education. From there we started building out our programs, working closely with our teachers and with our industry partners to show students how they can start businesses, build brands and work in technology from anywhere in the world.
As high school students ourselves we took a lot of inspiration from our own experiences in the classroom when building these programs, ensuring that the content was engaging, tangible and linked closely with what was happening in the industry.
Throughout the first half of 2018 we stated testing these programs with students across Queensland to see what worked as we refined our content until in the second half of 2018 we knew we had a winning combination.
Throughout the year we were taking our learnings from events and partners in China, Thailand, America and here in Australia and pouring this information into our programs to ensure that we could help grow a generation of students that had a triple threat of business, design and technology knowledge.
Semester two of 2018 saw us really take flight with these programs. With over 20 tours, 50 schools, and 80,000kms traveled, 2018 saw us working with over 16,000 students across the country.
Now as we stride into 2019 our team has grown again and as have our programs. 2019 has already seen the launch of our after school programs and our school holiday innovation camps. As we cruise through the year we are also very excited to be working on a number of new projects around the world and we can't wait to show you what we're up to.
As we celebrate our second birthday, we'd just like to thank all the amazing teachers, students, mentors and team that helped us get to where we are now. We're on a mission to inspire the next generation of Digital Creators and we have loved every second of working with you all!
Here's to another exciting year of innovation in education.
Scott and the BOP Team :)
