Wow! What a way to kick off term one for 2019! With programs, workshops and presentations run for students from primary school through to university, in locations ranging from Cairns to Texas, we've had a massive term and a great start to the year. Here's what we've been up to:
We kicked off the year with our Virgin Australia 'Innovation Camp' that saw over 30 passionate high school students coming from across Queensland for three days of 'innovation in aviation'! Working out of the Virgin Australia head offices in Brisbane and also out of their lounge at the airport, we had a fabulous time solving tough challenges with the airline. With ideas ranging from pools on planes to route expansion strategies, lounge redesigns and more, the students had an amazing time learning about the various careers in aviation.
Before we officially kicked off the term, we also were incredibly excited to expand the team as we hired seven new workshop facilitators that you'll all be seeing around at our workshops shortly. With backgrounds in IT, psychology, game design, business and more; these facilitators were picked out of almost 100 applications and we can't wait for you to meet them!
After wrapping up our 'Innovation Camp' along with our various other school holiday programs, we then got right into our after school programs working with Oakleigh State School's year 4-6 students as we focused on building them into Digital Innovators. Looking at a range of emerging technologies such as salt water powered cars, augmented reality, 3D printing and more; we worked throughout the term to look at how we can design a more efficient and sustainable future with technology.
Whilst our Digital Innovators were building in Brisbane, our team headed off on our regional tours for the term visiting Townsville, Cairns (twice!), Gladstone, Rockhampton and Yeppoon. With the support of our amazing travel partners at Virgin Australia we were able to work with over 3,000 students from across regional Queensland on these tours as we looked at technology, entrepreneurship, social enterprises and small businesses.
As part of these tours we also had the pleasure of working with our friends at 'Gen[in]' and 'Be Social. Be Smart.' to deliver a series of workshops for students across the state around 'Innovation In Employability'. With the support of Study Queensland, these workshops saw us working with students from the Gold Coast to Cairns as we got them future ready.
Whilst on our regional tours, our CEO and founder Scott Millar also had the pleasure of heading over to Austin, Texas for the annual South By Southwest festival on behalf of Screen Queensland. This two week festival saw Scott connecting with some of the leading minds in technology, education, entrepreneurship and the arts from around the world to help us bring the leading ideas to Australia. Supported by the wonderful team at Virgin Australia and Screen Queensland, Scott was also able to connect with a range of American educators and share ideas, activities and experiences; learning that Australia really is a leader in youth STEM and entrepreneurship education.
Throughout the term we also had the absolute pleasure of presenting at a range of events with partners such as BDO, Griffith University as well as a number of podcasts. We also received a very special gift from our friends at Microsoft - a brand new Surface Pro laptop! We're all absolutely loving the new laptop and all of the amazing Microsoft programs.
Then to finish up the term we then went back to where at all began, hosting our flagship 'Film Your Own Hologram' workshops at the World Science Festival Brisbane. As we started here just two years ago, we always love giving back to the community as we host these free workshops for thousands of guests from across the state.
Then as we prepared for out Easter school holiday programs, we had the pleasure of attending the inaugural QODE technology and innovation conference on behalf of Brisbane Marketing. We had a brilliant time showcasing our amazing young entrepreneurs and local legends here in Brisbane as we connected with industry leaders from across Queensland.
Well, that's a wrap for term one of 2019 and what a term it has been! We can't wait for all the exciting things the rest of the year has in store and we can't wait to see you all soon!
Scott and the BOP Team :)
